Gandhi

 

Background

 

     Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a real name of Gandhi. He was born in a town named Porbandar. He was married to his wife at the aged of 13. He was born in India, but he spent over 20 years to live in South Africa.  Gandhi studied law in London, and his goals were to help poor people and discrimination. He was killed by a fanatic in 1948.

 

Career and Work

 

   Gandhi was a lawyer, and he left India to study law in London. Gandhi was a prolific writer. He wrote a lot of his book about freedom to find freedom for Indian. Gandhi said,“ Live as if you died tomorrow; learn as if you were to live forever”. He was a leader of the Indian National Congress. He was fighting for Indian liberation. He spent his 20 years of life in South Africa to fight for freedom. Gandhi stood to fight against injustice, no matter where and in what conditions.

 

Fight for freedom in South Africa and India

 

    He spent over his 20 years of life to live in South Africa. When he was in Africa, he was a target of discrimination. He was racist. He was fighting for Indian to be treated the same as white. In 1894, he founded the Natal Indian Congress to organize Indian in South Africa. For Gandhi, “ Poverty is the worst form of violence.” When he returned to India, he helped Indians gain more right and got a better life. He took a leadership of the Indian National Congress to ease poverty.

 

Awards

 

       Time magazine named Gandhi the Man of the Year in 1930. The Government of India awarded the annual Gandhi Peace Prize to social worker. Gandhi had an effect in India life. People remembered him as a greatest leader in India, so they called him “ Mahatma", it means “ the Great Soul one". They celebrated his birthday as a National holiday in India every year. Celebrating his birthday as a National day showed that how important he was.
