
Arundhati Roy

Arundhati Roy is an Indian actress, activist, and author that is well known for her novel “The God of Small Things.” This novel would become a best seller. She is also known for being heavily involved in political and environmental activism.
Early Life
Roy was on November 24, 1961 in Shillong, Meghalaya. She was born to a Bengali father and a Syrian Christian mother, who also was a prominent women’s rights activist in India. During her early adolescent years she attended Pallikoodam (a school in Corpus Christi) and Lawrence School, Lovedale (a school in Tami Nadu). At the age of 16, she would move to Delhi. She encountered homelessness and had to sell bottles in order to make some kind of living. Later on she attended the Delhi School of Planning and Architecture to study architecture. Even though she went back to school for architecture, she realized that that field wasn’t something she was passionate about. Her talent and passion would end up being writing. In 1984, she met an independent filmmaker and he would later on introduce her to the film industry, where she would start writing and starring in films.
Career
Roy began her career in films and television.in 1989, she wrote her first screenplay for a film called “In Which Annie gives it to Those Ones.” She also costarred in that film. She won the National Film Award for best screenplay. After that film, Roy would continue to be involved in the film industry before she decided to create a novel. In 1996, Roy completed her novel “The God of Small Things.” The book described her experiences as a child and was commercial success that gave her international fame. Due to this book she received several accolades, such as being on the New York Times best seller list and being awarded the Booker Prize. She later would go on to write many other books and spend time developing essays on politics and culture.
Activism
Roy is very outspoken and dedicated to causes around the globe. After publishing her first novel, she has spent time advocating against many issues such as India’s nuclear policies and globalization problems. She has also been very vocal about foreign policies.
